Our Nordic team is the newest club sport on campus. We want to be both a competitive team and a team that gets newbies skiing for the first time. This year we attended four races in our division, and sent one skier to the college Nordic club nationals. We also hosted 2 learn to ski days. We want to grow our program, and this project will help with that!
Our team is less than a year old, and we must overcome some large hurdles in order to create a lasting program. Chief among these obstacles is a lack of gear. To recruit and maintain a strong team, we need to be able to invest in a critical amount of gear. Students won’t dedicate their time to a Nordic club that can’t provide equipment. Unlike other sports, cross country skiing is gear intensive; besides the initial set of two pairs of skis, poles, and boots; skiers constantly require a wide variety of wax for each race they compete in. Brushes, benches, irons, scrapers, corks, and many other tools are necessary to properly apply wax. Because we are the first Nordic team on campus, we don’t have an alumni base. Alumni often provide start-up funds for clubs, or the networks to do so. As a result, much of the time students could have put towards improving and growing the team has been spent on fundraising.
Why You Should Contribute
If our team doesn’t have to worry about getting enough wax for the next race, or scrounging up a pair of skis for a new member, we can focus on improving our club. Athletes can spend more time training on the snow, and attend more races. As well as strengthening our team, we can also strengthen our contributions to the campus community. Our club dynamic is open, friendly, and supportive. We love new members, even if they have never skied before. We host several learn to ski days a year; an opportunity for students of all backgrounds to try the sport.
Any contribution will help, and please make sure to share this message with your friends! With gear, we can send members to races, allow new students to try our sport, and add to the spirit of adventure and exploration that our college values.
