Support CC Arbor Day
Arbor Day is a nationwide celebration of trees. Colleges and universities around the country hold tree planting events each April to commemorate the importance of trees in ecosystems and landscapes. The goal is to have students help plant trees every April so that Colorado College can maintain our Tree Campus USA recognition. By having students plant trees, they become personally invested in the sustainability of the CC campus forest. You can learn more about the CC campus forest by visiting the online Tree Tour.
Why you should give
Your gift will help the Tree Advisory Committee and Grounds Crew continue our celebration of Arbor Day and commitment to a sustainable campus forest. This additional funding will allow Colorado College to maintain membership in the Tree Campus USA program and continue to educate students and the Colorado Springs community about the importance of trees in our landscapes and ecosystems.
The Campus Tree Advisory Committee was created in 2015 to assist the campus arborist with guidance concerning tree care management, future planning of the campus forest, and educating the CC community about the importance of trees. Students, faculty, staff, and community members voluntarily serve on the committee.
In 2017, Colorado College was accepted into the Tree Campus USA program and has successfully maintained the designation for last three years. To achieve this recognition, CC has met the Arbor Day Foundation’s five standards by establishing a campus tree advisory committee; implementing a campus tree care program; providing dedicated annual funding for tree care; observing Arbor Day; and providing service learning opportunities for CC students.
The last Arbor Day celebration at CC was held on April 27, 2018 with about 40 students volunteering their time to help plant seven trees and install a new xeric garden at Bemis Hall. Arbor Day was held in partnership with the Office of Sustainability's Earth Week festivities. We anticipate building on our previous year's success by having even greater student participation in this year’s Arbor Day celebration, which will focus on replanting street trees as a way to give back to the Colorado Springs community. As in years past, we’d like to thank our volunteers by providing a bellyful of food and commemorative T-shirt.
