CC Nordic is in its sixth year as a club, and fourth year as a club sport. We've grown from three to 30 members, and from skiing no races to competing as a Division II club sport with the Rocky Mountain Conference!
Our main principle as a team is that we want Nordic to be accessible to everyone within our CC community: that means that we provide all of the gear, training, and financial support necessary for anyone to join the Nordic Ski Team — no experience necessary.
Because of this, our team has a wide variety of experience and ability levels, from people who grew up on skis, to those who skied competitively in high school, and some who have never seen snow. We have members from all over the world, with different majors and hobbies, creating a strong community of teammates and friends.
However, being able to provide the "no experience necessary" element has become increasingly difficult as our team experiences exponential growth. Our funding from the school covers only specific costs, such as race registration fees. We have no extra budget to allot to things such as wax, skis, trail passes, and transportation costs, all of which are currently covered by students.
We crowdfunded two years ago and were able to purchase 10 new sets of gear (skis, boots, and poles), which have allowed us to support the huge growth in membership. We crowdfunded again last year and were able to increase that number to 15 sets of gear and a collection of wax. Now, we're in a position where we have the physical materials, but no funding to actually attend events. To attend races and train, each student typically spends several hundred dollars to cover transportation, accommodations, food, and trail passes. On a case-by-case basis, we have been able to support athletes who need assistance covering these costs. However, to truly be accessible, we need to raise funds to be able to better support all athletes on our team such that financial burden is not a limiting factor in ability to participate.
We appreciate any and all support, and are truly grateful to all those who give to this snow-loving, long-running, fake-prom-organizing, dance-partying, and potluck-having team.
